There are lessons we are taught explicitly. And then there are those lived into us so thoroughly that, by adulthood, we mistake them for common sense.
Years ago, on an overcast afternoon in an Atlanta laundromat, something as ordinary as folding a fitted sheet taught me that what feels ordinary in one life may be extraordinary in another.
It also taught me something about inheritance, self-sufficiency, relationships, and the invisible architecture of upbringing.
We do not all arrive at adulthood carrying the same preparation. But I have long believed something equally important: whatever life lessons we did not get at home, we can get on our own.
Childhood helps form us. Adulthood gives us the opportunity to continue the work.
