Paint made from pollution π¨π
In Appalachia, a project called True Pigments is transforming toxic runoff from an abandoned coal mine into usable paint pigments. For decades, acid mine drainage has released millions of pounds of iron oxide into Sunday Creek, severely damaging the ecosystem.
Now, a partnership between Rural Action and Ohio University is cleaning the water by removing sulfuric acid and heavy metals, then repurposing those materials into pigments for paints and tints. Revenue from the pigments helps fund restoration efforts while creating local jobs and supporting the regional economy.
Could turning waste into valuable materials become a new model for environmental recovery?
