Restoring Andean forests, one tree at a time π³ποΈ
Constantino founded Accion Andina after recognizing that only 10 percent of the Andes' native forest remains, lost to deforestation, grazing, and mining. Working with 150 indigenous communities across five countries, the initiative has planted over 10 million trees and restored more than 15,000 hectares. The focus is on polylepis, a native tree whose moss-covered bark captures water critical to local communities as glaciers retreat.
Beyond ecology, communities are building nurseries and microbusinesses, turning restoration into a source of income. The goal is 1 million hectares restored by 2045, a model that ties biodiversity, water security, and human livelihoods together.
Can community-led reforestation become the most effective climate adaptation tool we have?
