Turning an invasive weed into an alternative to plastic 🌿♻️
Kenyan startup HyaPak transforms water hyacinth, an invasive plant that can choke waterways and disrupt local ecosystems, into plant-based packaging. Working with local fishermen to harvest the weed also creates an additional source of income for surrounding communities.
HyaPak uses the material to produce packaging and biodegradable seedling bags that can be planted directly into the soil. In trials, seedlings grown in the bags developed 21 to 23% faster. The company says it has already cleared around 20 acres of water hyacinth.
