A basketball court designed to prevent flooding 🏟🌧️ In Rotterdam, Benthemplein doubles as both a public square and climate infrastructure. Three sunken basins collect rainwater from surrounding streets and rooftops, storing around 1.7 million litres during heavy rainfall and reducing pressure on the city’s drainage system. On dry days, the space is used for basketball, skating, and socializing. When heavy rain arrives, the courts temporarily transform into water storage before gradually draining and returning to everyday use. Could more cities turn everyday spaces into climate infrastructure? www.urbanisten.nl/work/benthem... #climateresilience #urbandesign #sustainablecities #climateadaptation #futurecities #urbaninnovation
