It may sound surprising, but sugar (glucose), simple and natural, contains a remarkably high amount of chemical energy.
Widely studied in Biofuel Cell research, glucose offers several key advantages as an energy source:
· Abundant and naturally available
· Non-toxic and safe to handle
· Stable and low volatility
· Cost-effective
At a molecular level, the difference is striking:
· Glucose oxidation can theoretically release up to 24 electrons per molecule
· Lithium, by comparison, releases just 1 electron per atom
➡️ This means that 1 glucose molecule carries the equivalent electron potential of 24 lithium atoms.
In terms of intrinsic energy:
· Glucose ≈ 2870 kJ/mol
· Lithium ≈ 357 kJ/mol
