Operator note from the data-fabric side of the energy transition: The interesting climate-tech bets right now are not the generation assets. They're the seams. Specifically: - The seam between a distributed asset and the system of record (who paid, who dispatched, who carries the risk) - The seam between a carbon claim and the underlying activity that produced it - The seam between a country-scale forecast and the smallholder/household-scale reality These seams are why most climate deployments stall after pilot. The hardware works. The models work. The settlement layer doesn't exist. From the c51 / REALM build (Uganda + India), three operating principles we keep coming back to: 1. Identity before optimisation. You cannot optimise what you cannot reliably name. 2. Provenance before prediction. A noisy signal you can audit beats a clean signal you cannot. 3. Settlement before scale. If two systems disagree about what just happened, you do not have a deployment, you have a dispute. Pattern of the week: "clean seams" beats clever models, every time. We're seeing the same anti-pattern across health, agri and logistics deployments: - Team picks a powerful model. - Wires it to messy upstream data. - Wraps it in a clever orchestration layer. - Demos brilliantly. - Dies on contact with real operations. The failure isn't the model. It's the seam between AI output and system of record. If your data fabric can't carry settlement-grade truth (who, where, when, what changed, who signed off), no amount of model capability will save the workflow downstream. The c51 / REALM framing we keep coming back to: 1. Identity layer (who is this entity, persistently) 2. Provenance layer (where did this data come from) 3. Settlement layer (what's the source of truth when things disagree) 4. Orchestration layer (only then does AI go on top) Most "AI strategies" we audit skip 1-3 entirely. Heuristic of the week — if you can't audit it, it isn't AI infrastructure. A pattern we keep coming back to at c51 AI across the REALM builds (Uganda agri, Krishi India, Australia logistics): Most "AI-powered" systems are still demo-grade. They look smart in the demo loop and fall apart the moment a regulator, an exporter or an insurer asks the only question that matters — "show me the lineage." Three quick filters we use before something gets called "infrastructure": 1. Replayable lineage. Any output the system produced last quarter must be reconstructable end-to-end today. 2. Accountable seams. Every place AI output crosses into a system of record has a named human checkpoint. No silent writes. 3. Counterfactual logging. We log what the model didn't choose, not just what it did. That's the part regulators and auditors actually need. Clean seams, audit-first, human checkpoints. Boring on the slide.
