The Role of Humor and Dynamic Techniques in Enhancing Meditation: An Integrative Perspective Marc Bestgen, Founder, Asanamaste Meditation Abstract While traditional meditation practices emphasize stillness and silence, emerging evidence from neuroscience, positive psychology, and contemplative research suggests that incorporating humor and movement-based techniques can enhance cognitive, emotional, and neurobiological benefits. My article explores the rationale behind blending humor and dynamic meditation in contemporary sessions. Drawing on clinical data, somatic practices, and fieldwork with diverse populations, the proposed model presents meditation not merely as introspection, but as transformation—stimulated by laughter, motion, and neuroplastic engagement. 1. Introduction Meditation, classically defined as a process of cultivating attention and awareness, is undergoing a dynamic shift in the modern era. While rooted in traditions of stillness and solemnity, contemporary insights invite us to consider new vectors for deepening presence. One such vector is humor; another is movement. For over years, I have led hundreds of meditation sessions integrating dynamic humor. This is not a departure from tradition, but a functional adaptation based on a biopsychosocial understanding of the human experience—especially in contexts of chronic stress, trauma, or emotional fatigue. 2. Humor as a Neurocognitive Enhancer Humor is more than entertainment—it is a cognitive process that involves incongruity detection, resolution, emotional shift, and social resonance. Neuroscientific studies (Mobbs et al., 2003; Chan et al., 2012) demonstrate that humor activates brain regions linked to reward (ventromedial prefrontal cortex), social cognition (temporal lobes), and emotional regulation (amygdala and anterior cingulate cortex). This is in very short my actual research and passion. Care to talk with me about this? Contact me please, my WhatsApp is +32486238501 Marc Bestgen 2025
