🌍 The Problem Every year, more than 92 million tons of textile waste are produced worldwide. Most of it is burned, buried or exported to the Global South, where it clogs rivers, pollutes soils and creates social injustice. At the same time, the construction industry is responsible for almost 40% of global CO₂ emissions and faces rising costs of raw materials. These two crises overlap: on one side waste keeps growing, on the other construction keeps demanding more resources in unsustainable ways. 💡 Our Idea We believe that waste can be more than a problem. By combining non-recyclable textiles with hydrated lime, we are creating LimeTex, a building material that is light, durable and sustainable. During curing it hardens by naturally absorbing CO₂ from the air, while textile fibers reinforce the structure. For society, this means reducing textile waste in landfills and incinerators, preventing harmful exports to the Global South, and activating short local supply chains with positive effects on European territories. For the construction sector, this means a sustainable and circular material that does not compromise technical performance or compliance, that costs less than standard materials because the raw input is free and stable, and that gives access to ESG credits, green incentives and sustainable public procurement. 🌱 Our Values Our work is guided by circularity, fairness and collaboration. We want to show that waste can be the beginning of something new, and that building materials can connect industries instead of dividing them. What we are building is not only about the environment, it is also about creating opportunities and benefits for those who construct. 🚀 What we are working on We are working with a materials scientist to refine LimeTex, with a business mentor to shape our startup, and with a designer to rebrand TextileRefuge. At the same time we are creating links between the textile recycling world and the construction industry, because only by connecting them can LimeTex become a true solution.

Why is our waste ending up in the Global South? ​The answer lies right here: in the fabric itself. 🌍 ​This is what fast fashion garments—often made of low-quality, mixed fibers—look like when shredded. Current technology simply cannot separate these blends for recycling. Because they are impossible to recycle, when they are not burned, they are packed and exported—overwhelming communities and ecosystems abroad. ​At TextileRefuge, we refuse to accept this "written fate." ​We intercept these unrecyclable textiles and intervene before they become pollution. By mixing them with lime, we extend their life, transforming them into a malleable material ready to be shaped. We turn a material that creates injustice elsewhere into a durable resource right here. ​The final step: proving its strength. 💪 ​Here, a sample of our LimeTex is undergoing compressive strength testing. This isn't just about recycling; it's about creating a high-performance building material that can stand the test of time. We are proving that even the most difficult waste can become the foundation of something solid and lasting.
