An offshore wind farm in France gave its fish a place to live too.
Ocean Winds built 32 small fish nursery structures called Biohuts onto the floating platforms of its Éoliennes Flottantes du Golfe du Lion wind farm off the French Mediterranean coast, developed with marine restoration group ECOCEAN.
The idea is very simple. Offshore turbines have already been in the water for decades, so the floating structure doubles as an artificial habitat for juvenile fish, designed to mimic the natural nurseries that coastal development has reduced.
This detail matters more than it might seem. Offshore wind permitting increasingly hinges on environmental impact, and habitat-friendly design features like this one are becoming a real factor in whether coastal and marine communities support new projects, not just an afterthought once the turbines are already approved.
It's a small addition to a wind farm, but it is also a preview of how offshore energy projects will likely need to be designed going forward, with ecological function built in rather than added on.
