A new alliance wants to make the hardest plastic waste worth recycling.
Vary Tech, Evonik, and SupeZET used the IFAT Munich trade fair on May 11 to launch a joint process for turning mixed, low-value plastic waste into circular naphtha and high-quality pyrolysis oil that meets petrochemical standards, the kind of waste mechanical recycling has never been able to handle.
The three companies also agreed to build a joint venture in Singapore focused on chemical recycling and sustainable aviation fuel from biomass. They also announced a separate plan with JE Synergy to build Asia's first closed-loop chemical recycling demonstration project for municipal plastic waste.
This is very important because mixed and contaminated plastic has always been the hardest waste to deal with. Mechanical recyclers simply cannot process it economically.
Pairing established chemical engineering expertise with a dedicated pyrolysis process gives a sign that this corner of plastic circularity is moving from pilot projects toward real industrial infrastructure.
