While developing an AI project focused on improving plastic waste classification, one thing
really surprised me:
A lot of recycling inefficiency actually happens after people recycle correctly.
Before researching the sector, I used to think the biggest problem was citizens not separating
waste properly at home. But even highly automated plants still lose huge amounts of efficiency
because materials arrive contaminated, mixed incorrectly, or difficult to identify fast enough.
What I found interesting is that modern recycling increasingly feels like a data and sorting
problem as much as an environmental one.
That’s where AI and computer vision become genuinely useful in ways most people never really see.
