What needs to happen in order for the farmer to actually make a profit?
A British agriculture enthusiast (the.agrecruiter) shared this calculation on TikTok:
Bread price in a store: £1.38
What the farmer receives: £0.11
Loss per ton of grain: £10
Turn into a profit: +£0.02 per bread
As little as two pence extra per bread is the difference between loss and profits for the farmer.
This isn't just a British problem. In Norway, the margins are under pressure, while the prices of groceries are increasing. Who laughs all the way to the bank? Not the farmer!
