THE FUTURE OF PROTEIN 🌿
Spirulina can be grown anywhere in the world and is most commonly grown with exposure from the sun. Growing it indoors keeps a very controlled environment to get a more precise and higher-quality product every time. Also, if you’ve been to Iceland, you will know it’s not always sunny, and the geothermal energy provides clean energy for the whole system! 🙌
There are a number of startups currently exploring spirulina as a plant-based protein source, and we hope to see them on the shelves soon! One brand we are keeping a close eye on are Edonia who are based in France.
Microalgae, otherwise known as spirulina, is being used to create plant-based meats as it is rich in protein, provides a great umami flavour, contains all essential amino acids, and is high in omega-3. The green colour can be removed without removing nutrients by separating the water-soluble phycocyanin from the chlorophyll, so not every burger has to be green!
VAXA’s plant grows this spirulina in its production facility 365 days a year using green energy from the neighbouring geothermal power plant.
With animal-based proteins linked to environmental destruction and, of course, cruelty, this is a great alternative protein source that is future-proofed and completely carbon negative.

THE JUNGLE DOME 🌳🌿
The Geoje Botanical Garden in South Korea has over 10,000 plants, many of which are endangered species, and operates as a biodiversity conservation facility 🌍
We wish every city could have a facility like this to show both children and adults the importance of protecting nature!
The slide park was also very fun 🤣 We were the only adults on it, but the slides were not small, and we picked up some real speed!
We highly recommend adding this place as a stop if you plan to visit South Korea soon 💚

ACTIVEWEAR WITHOUT THE PLASTIC! 👟
You can check out the Performance Without Toxicity exhibition for free at The Mills Fabrica innovation gallery called FABRICA X, London. With just over two weeks remaining before it closes on 26 June, it's a great opportunity to explore the future of materials, circular design, and healthier manufacturing.
The exhibition has four key areas:
🎾 Reimagining Materials: explores alternatives from plastic which is often found in sports apparel.
🧪 Greener Chemistries: looks at how high performance clothing doesn’t need toxic chemical treatments.
♻️ Beyond Durability: explores designing for longevity, repair and circular systems.
👟 Future Footwear: rethinks how footwear is designed and produced.
This was honestly such an inspiring look at the future of sportswear, showing that high-performance gear doesn’t need to come at the cost of our health or the environment!
Let us know if you visit!

IT’S TIME FOR CLEAN AIR ACTION!💨
From clean air zones to public transport, these cities are tackling toxic air in order to transform our communities, streets, and health. Clean air is a human right, and its benefits should be felt by everyone 🙌
That’s why in 2023, the Breathe Cities initiative was created to raise awareness about the impacts of air pollution, engage communities and grassroots organisations to take action, and support real change in cities around the world. To date, 14 cities are involved in the Breathe Cities initiative, with many more now learning from their experiences.
By putting people at the heart of clean air action, city leaders can create healthier, more resilient places to live, play, and work.
Let us know in the comments what your city is doing to help improve air quality, and share this video if you hope to see more action against air pollution everywhere! 💚

UPCYCLING TENNIS BALLS 🎾
300 million tennis balls end up in landfills every single year. Brussels-based designer Mathilde Wittock is doing something about it.
This is one of our favourite upcycling projects we’ve seen in person!
We stopped by her studio here in Brussels to see it up close. She collects discarded balls, dyes them with non-toxic colours, and interlocks them, no glue, no adhesives, into acoustic panels, furniture and wall art that can be fully taken apart and rebuilt into something new.
With events like Wimbledon using 55,000 balls alone, solutions like this aren’t just clever - they’re necessary 🙌

4 STARTUPS IN AFRICA HEALING THE PLANET 🌍
The Global South has only minimally contributed to climate change, yet it is disproportionately affected. These startups are fixing problems created by the Global North and were selected as part of the Impact 100 list. A list by the Norrsken of 100 companies working to heal our planet. Check out the full list below.
1. VunaPay 🇰🇪
VunaPay is paying small farmers instantly. Smallholder farmers bear the brunt of climate change, droughts, floods, and failed harvests, then wait months to get paid. VunaPay flips that. Instant payments at delivery, so farmers can reinvest, build climate resilience, and escape cycles of poverty.
2. Arnergy 🇳🇬
Arnergy is replacing diesel with solar power. In Nigeria, where widespread power outages are a daily occurrence, they’re installing smart solar batteries to replace diesel generators. Clean, reliable energy and no more blackouts!
3. Octavia Carbon 🇰🇪
Octavia Carbon is pulling CO2 straight out of the air using Direct Air Capture technology, then storing it underground in volcanic rock. Kenya’s 93% renewable grid makes this carbon removal tech affordable.
4. FarmWorks 🇰🇪
FarmWorks is building an entire food ecosystem to reduce food waste. Providing farmers with equipment and connecting them to markets. Creating systems that feed their own people, rather than just exporting elsewhere.

SURFBOARDS FROM WASTE 🏄
These surf fins were once part of a wind turbine blade. They are precision-cut to keep the original strength and flex of the blades. ‘Turbine Made’ is a collaboration between ACCIONA and Bolero, repurposing decommissioned turbine blades into high-performance fins.
ACCIONA also created the world’s first surfboards from decommissioned wind turbine blades.
Wind turbine blades are made of complex, layered materials like fiberglass and carbon fibre, which is exactly why the industry is actively developing end-of-life solutions to keep every blade out of landfill.
